YOU CAN’T CUT EDGE

While Windows Update was busy nicking users’ favourite programs, it was also restoring their least favourite apps. No ‘Do you want this app back?’, no OK button, no nothing. Just a great big automatic waste of people’s time.

According to several apoplectic Reddit contributors (www.snipca.com/18801), the November update restored default apps – including the much disliked Edge browser, and unwanted game apps such as Xbox (see screenshot) – that people had spent time and effort getting rid of in their supposedly customisable new OS.

Th e update also reverted key PC settings to Microsoft’s defaults, overriding any changes you’d made. Have you spent time changing your file associations, for example setting PDFs to open in Acrobat Reader instead of the dreaded Edge? Bad luck. Windows Update has changed the default back to Edge – which is now your default browser again, too.

Some reports suggest that these annoyances are mere bugs, and they’ll be fixed by incremental automatic updates. That remains to be seen, so keep an eye on our News pages for the latest.
